Halo Infinite is one of the year’s most highly anticipated titles. While games such as The Last of Us Part II and Cyberpunk 2077 have taken headlines and turned heads, Halo Infinite has the opportunity to end 2020 with a bang and to return the Master Chief to his place on the throne of Xbox software.

Xbox Games Showcase
The rumored Xbox Series X event has been confirmed by Microsoft. Fans can be excited that on July 23, 2020, they will finally get a plethora of game reveals for the new Xbox console. Thrilling information regarding the Xbox Series X has been rare lately, but this Xbox Games Showcase could finally change the tides.
Microsoft has spent a lot of time and resources acquiring and creating studios over the past few years. To accompany the launch of the Xbox Series X, this showcase could finally be the time to show off many of the new projects. Yet even with Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, Playground Games,and a host of other developers perhaps announcing their new games, Halo Infinite has the potential to completely steal the show. It is likely that Infinite will either start the show with a bang or be the very last climatic finish to the event.
Halo Infinite Gameplay
What fans want to see most from Halo Infinite is gameplay, and that’s exactly what they are going to get. Microsoft has confirmed that Halo Infinite will be at the Xbox Games Showcase, and specifically, that gameplay will be shown for the first time.
A trailer for Infinite was shown during E3 of 2019, but legitimate gameplay wasn’t a part of the video. While small and interesting story elements were hinted at, the trailer was mostly a showcase of what the game may look like visually. The teaser was pretty and exciting, but the appetite for gameplay wasn’t quenched. This time around, gameplay will probably be the highlight of what is shown, and there are a lot of questions as to what that will look like.
Halo Infinite could break the mold on what players have come to expect from the series. True space exploration could be a part of Infinite, with the ability to travel from planet to planet to tackle missions and hunt down enemies. It would be marvelous if the Master Chief had the ability to fly through space seamlessly without any loading times, and showing off gameplay of this during the event would certainly impress audiences around the world.

Along with gameplay of grunts being blasted into oblivion, possible space exploration, and more, it’s likely that the gameplay will be heavy on the story as well. There are many theories as to what Halo Infinite will do in terms of narrative, including the idea that Cortana has taken over the galaxy. What is known is that the ring is making a return, which is exciting for Halo zealots.
The name Infinite could also point to Halo taking a turn towards a games of service or shared world style game, much like Destiny, developed by Bungie who once created Halo in the first place. Infinite could just be the name, and an indication of something related to the story. But it could also be pointing to what the game is as an idea, and it’s possible that the showcase will point out what Halo Infinite is as a concept. As long as the game has its impressive campaign and endlessly replayable multiplayer, a change in terms of how that game is packaged, along with co-op and shared world experiences, could be a welcome addition. With details about the return of an old Halo enemy from the non-mainline games coming out recently, the possibilities are endless.
Speaking of multiplayer, the Xbox Games Showcase could also give players the first taste of the Infinite multiplayer experience. Halo would not be Halo without the amazing mix of arena and sandbox-style competitive and casual multiplayer. There are many things that fans would like to see with the multiplayer of Halo Infinite, including dynamic maps, duel-wielding, and a proper mix of newer modes and ideas like Halo 5’s Breakout. It is totally possible that during the Xbox Games Showcase, Microsft kicks off the event with multiplayer gameplay, and then bookends the show with a massive campaign gameplay reveal. In the eyes of many Halo lovers, this would be ideal.
Halo’s Return to Supremacy
Regardless of the details of the showcase in terms of Halo Infinite, there’s one thing that all Xbox fans should hope to expect–the return of Halo’s supremacy. While many argue which is the best Halo game, it’s impossible to ignore that the popularity of the series has dipped.
The apex of the series’ hype was probably around the launch of Halo 3, and that game didn’t disappoint. But with the Master Chief not starring in Halo: Reach and 344 Studios taking over the franchise after Bungie’s departure, it seems as if each game has come with a little less excitement than the last. That being said, Halo 5: Guardians did sell rather well at launch, even if the campaign disappointed.
The hope is that whatever Halo Infinite is, this will be the title to bring back the series to its prominence. If Microsft wants Xbox to win this generation, it would certainly be helpful if Infinite could become the killer app right off the bat. By the end of July, it’s possible that campaign footage, multiplayer gameplay, and the package that is Infinite is revealed to show that Halo is back. And that’s definitely something to look forward to.
