The initial story trailer was then followed up by another which focused on gameplay, and this is what really perked gamers’ attention. Protagonist Pinocchio is seen wielding a variety of weapons, from swords to axes, and even what looks like a whirligig saw, which fans of Bloodborne should be familiar with. While the story is based on the classic Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, it is extremely obvious that the game will draw heavy inspiration from the Soulsborne series, and the similarities to Bloodborne in particular are obvious. With both trailers focusing on different elements, it will be interesting to see what the next trailer reveals, and there are a couple of things it should include.

All Eyes Will Be on Lies of P’s Next Trailer

Now gamers have had a brief glimpse of both the story and gameplay elements, the next trailer should start to get a little more specific in terms of what it shows. The most obvious thing missing so far has been a good look at the man (or machine, as the case may be) himself. Giving players a better look at the protagonist will shed some light on just what sort of Pinocchio will star in this game. Chances are, it won’t quite be the cute, happy version familiar to those who’ve seen the 1940 Disney cartoon, but a far more distorted version. So far, developers Round 8 Studio and Neowitz Games have primarily shown Pinocchio from the back. From what has been shown, certain things can be concluded. The first and most obvious thing is that this version of the well known puppet is not entirely made of wood like most other versions are.

Indeed, his left arm seems to be constructed of metal, and this arm looks to be able to attach gadgets such as a grappling hook to it with relative ease. Pinocchio is shown using this grappling hook to pull enemies up close from a wide range, bringing them within striking distance before unleashing a killing blow. With the inclusion of a mechanical arm, it seems Lies of P is perfectly placed to adopt Bloodborne’s trick weapons. The arm also looks to be able to wield magic of sorts, with fire and other elements shown being used either directly against enemies, or indirectly by imbuing weapons with them.

Aside from Pinocchio, gamers have only seen Geppetto so far, and it can’t really be ascertained whether he will be friend or foe, although the former looks more likely at this stage. Players will be hoping for a look at some other characters set to feature in the game. The developer has talked about the importance of dialogue throughout, with every lie told purported to make Pinocchio ‘more human’, but exactly what this means is unknown at the moment. What Pinocchio does and says, depending on options chosen by the player, is said to dynamically affect the gameplay. This ’lie’ system could potentially be where Lies of P differentiates itself from Bloodborne and other similar titles. Hopefully, the next trailer will also give some more detail on this extremely intriguing element.

Of all the upcoming Soulslike games announced for the next few years, Lies of P is perhaps the one that looks the most promising, with its blend of dark fantasy with horror and Dark Souls style combat. Time will tell if the unlikely combination of a Disney movie and a Soulslike game will pay dividends after all.

Lies of P is currently in development.
